Common Commercial Soap and Skin Care Ingredients

  • SODIUM LAURYL SULPHATE (SLS) - can cause irritation to your eyes, skin, mouth and lungs. For people with sensitive skin, sulfates may also clog pores and cause acne.

  • SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (SLES) - concerns with this additive are organ system toxicity and irritation of the skin, eyes and lungs. Even more concerning is the contaminant that can form as a by-product of the manufacturing process called 1,4-dioxane. This nasty chemical is a known carcinogen.

  • PARABENS - can act like the hormone estrogen in the body and disrupt the normal function of hormone systems affecting male and female reproductive system functioning, reproductive development, fertility and birth outcomes.

  • METHYLISOTHIAZOLINONE & METHYLCHLOROISOTHIAZOLINONE - risks associated with these preservatives include skin irritation, lung and respiratory issues and neurotoxicity.

  • FRAGRANCES - some artificial fragrances can be absorbed through the skin posing complications such as endocrine disruption, organ toxicity, allergies, asthma, neurotoxicity and cancer. They frequently contain phthalates (which won’t be listed on labels), which are associated with hormone disruption and developmental toxicity.
